Keeping Your Tech Secure, No Matter Where You’re Working

Father-son duo Paul and Ryan Angott are no strangers to invention. Paul has 42 patents to his name and a long history of innovating products, including the first self-guided commercial lawnmower and a breast cancer detection system. Ryan has worked in cybersecurity for over 7 years, selling over $24 million in complex security software..

But when Ryan was traveling for work, he realized how challenging it was to keep his laptop safe and secure. If he was working in a coffee shop, he had to pack up everything just to run to the counter for a refill. It wasted time and energy, but considering that 1,600 laptops are stolen each day, it was a necessary inconvenience to keep his items safe.

It didn’t take long for Paul and Ryan to put their heads together and come up with a new way to keep laptops secure, no matter where people were working. With Paul’s background in design and Ryan’s knowledge of security, they created LapLok, a unique device that can attach a laptop to almost any surface, preventing grab and go theft. Not only does it keep the laptop from being snatched, but in the event someone tampers with it, an alarm sounds to ward off would-be thieves.

Challenges in marketing and prototyping

LapLok was the perfect solution for traveling business people who found themselves working in hotels, airports, and other places away from home. But then, Covid threatened to keep LapLok from getting off the ground at all. Airports closed down, and millions of people started working from home. With no one traveling, was there still a need for LapLok?

The massive increase of people working remotely proved to be a perfect pivot point. Rather than focusing on traveling executives, Paul and Ryan realized that the entire country was working remotely and still needed to protect their devices whether they were working from home, at a coffee shop, or in coworking spaces. LapLok was the perfect solution.

Their challenges weren’t over, though. Paul and Ryan struggled to find a manufacturer who could successfully create prototypes and manufacture LapLok to the exact specifications required. With its 140 unique parts, even one small error could prevent the entire product from working correctly. After several frustrating attempts with manufacturers, they reached out to Gembah for help.

The perfect match for precision in manufacturing

Gembah matched LapLok with a supplier who could manufacture the product with the attention to detail and quality required to ensure each LapLok was produced according to specifications. Ryan and Paul preferred a manufacturer outside of China, and Gembah found the perfect match with a company in India

After successful prototyping, Gembah helped ensure the quality of the final product by taking it through quality control and carefully monitoring all aspects of manufacturing. LapLok is now in the prelaunch phase and already has large orders from companies that are proactively concerned with their remote workforce’s security.

After a resounding success with Gembah, Paul and Ryan are interested in working with Gembah on several other products which will help keep laptops and other devices secure on the go.

Refill, Reuse, Recycle: Sustainable Meals To Go

Small items can make a big impact, and that’s what Alison Rogers had in mind when she developed the concept for USEFULL. Disposable containers and other single-use items made of plastic contribute to environmental waste both in their creation and disposal, and eating and drinking out of plastic containers can harm humans as well. But single-use plastics are very convenient, especially in environments like college campuses or business cafeterias where meals are often taken to go to eat outside of the cafeteria.

Alison wondered: How would people who buy meals at the cafeteria located in her office feel about using reusable containers rather than disposable ones?

With that basic question, she started small. She began standing in the cafeteria on her break, offering her colleagues reusable bamboo cups as they got in the line for lunch. While most were open to the idea of reusable cups, they weren’t fans of bamboo products themselves. Thrilled that people were open to reusing containers, Alison began her mission to find the perfect reusable product.

sustainable steel cup manufacturing

Designed for Sustainability

Stainless steel turned out to be the best option for reusable containers. Not only was it beautiful and durable, but if the product became damaged, the stainless steel could be recycled more easily than plastic.

Alison helped design premium stainless steel cups and bowls, vacuum-sealed to help cold products stay cold and hot products stay hot. In the designs, each cup would include a unique QR code on the bottom, and the USEFULL app could track each item. The intention was for college students or other institutions to check out their cups or bowls much like a library book and then return them within 2 days to be washed in USEFULL’s partner commercial kitchens.  This check out process would keep hundreds of disposable containers out of landfills.

USEFULL began accepting pre-orders, and dozens of colleges and businesses were ready to accept a completely new, sustainable way of containing food.

But Alison ran into a major problem, one that can happen to any first time creator. After handing a 50% deposit to a local inventory broker, Alison waited patiently for her first shipment. The shipment never came. The broker took her money and disappeared, leaving Alison with a backlog of unfilled orders and disappointed customers.

That’s when she reached out to Gembah.

A Reliable Partner

After she explained her situation, Gembah assured Alison that they could help her fulfill her production demands.  Gembah was able to help Alison in that unfortunate situation, and get the process back on track. Though Alison didn’t have in-depth experience working with factories and managing production, Gembah walked her through the process, supporting her as she learned and guiding her as she navigated new relationships.

Gembah reached out to the factory Alison had already been working with and took over walking the products through quality assurance and quality control, managed production, and shipped the end product to customers. One drawback of this original factory was that they did not work with recycled steel, so Gembah found another factory that was better able to meet USEFULL’s needs. Not only could the new factory use recycled steel, but they also had several certifications needed for the end product.

To say that USEFULL has been a wild success would be an understatement. USEFULL recently won an EPA Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant, a highly competitive grant which will allow USEFULL to study and implement more sustainable food containers. In fact, USEFULL has grown so rapidly that they’ve been able to hire their own full-time supply chain manager and other employees who will take over the processes that Gembah has been managing.

Success Story

From a Creator

“The Gembah team has really helped us,” said Alison. “We’ve gotten our first two production runs done with Gembah and built strong relationships with factories because Gembah saved the day. When I came to Gembah it felt like mission impossible. I’ve learned a lot, and while it’s bittersweet to leave Gembah I’m very thankful to have someone full-time focused on managing our products.”

More Party, Less Planning: Charming Parties in a Box

When it comes to party planning, Anna Bacon has the creativity to pull it off with grace and style. She started planning parties for her children by curating party supplies from Amazon to match themes that her children requested, from princesses to ninjas. As her children got older, she began spending more time planning. She mixed and matched designs from party stores and Etsy, trying to find the perfect combinations that would give her an elegant, beautiful, and cohesive theme throughout every piece of the party.

But her children’s requests became more specific, she started noticing how hard it was to find the right pieces. One store had some pieces and one store had others, but they might not exactly match. She spent countless hours searching for the perfect decorations and kitchenware and wondered if other parents or party planners might be facing the same problem. In addition, Anna started thinking about the environmental impact of all the plastics she was ordering. She switched to wooden tableware instead of plastic, but she was curious of what else she could do to reduce her environmental footprint?

Ordering online has its challenges, and sometimes what you receive doesn’t arrive as expected. Anna started thinking about how she could solve the sourcing issues that other parents and planners had by pulling together one curated, matching themed event box for the perfect party atmosphere. She wanted to create a one-stop place that provides meticulous, custom curated party designs to help pull gorgeous celebrations off without a hitch.  That is when Ma fete was born.

The Party Begins

Anna started by hiring illustrators and designers from other marketplaces to create pieces to match the three themes she had in mind. She wanted her products to be made out of paper to cut down on the impact plastics have on the environment, and she wanted to offer parents the chance to create a beautiful party without spending a fortune.

But after she had a portfolio of gorgeous designs, she needed to figure out how to take the images and make products she could actually sell. As a brand new entrepreneur, she didn’t know how to complete the steps needed to take her ideas to a factory, how to find a factory to create the products, or where to even begin the final steps of her journey.

Completing the Puzzle

While adept at party planning and an eye for design, Anna did not have the experience necessary to complete the final steps in creating her product, and that’s when she reached out to Gembah. Gembah supported Anna’s sourcing needs by gathering quotes from factories and helping her select the right ones that could create the products she wanted. Though most of her products are paper, some had pieces that needed to be hand-placed by humans, adding complexity to the products. Gembah helped her find a single factory capable of producing all of her products, saving the time and logistical headache in dealing with multiple factories.

Since products like napkins and plates needed to be food safe, Gembah ushered her products through the necessary lab testing and compliance to ensure they were safe for kids. Gembah also worked with the factory to meet her specific design requirements including match colors, ensuring the factory used the correct colors for different products to keep everything matching.

After a year of hard work, Anna expects to have her products in hand next month. She’s partnered with other brands and is building demand for her product through social media, and hopes to open stores all around the United States.

Success Story

“I was looking for somebody who could connect me with factories in China, because I didn’t know at all how it all worked. I really liked the team and the people [at Gembah]. They are very supportive and always easy to get in touch with and very helpful.”

The Process Of Innovation

About the Video

One common mistake many innovators make is failing to research the feasibility of their product before starting the production process. Having a great idea is not enough. There are several things to consider beforehand to ensure that there’s adequate demand for the product to avoid losses in time and money.

It is also important for innovators to make sure that they have the right team in place to bring their idea to fruition. Not only that, but they need to find out if there are limitations on the design they want to use in case someone else had a similar idea and already got the patent.

Zack Leonard, the President and Founder of Gembah, sits down with Rich Goldstein, host of the Innovations and Breakthroughs Podcast, to discuss the steps involved in the innovation process. They talk about determining the right technology to use, the importance of doing feasibility research, and tips for creating prototypes.

Here’s a glimpse of what you’ll learn:

  • How Zack helps his clients through the innovation process

  • Budget and time constraints when adopting technology for innovation purposes

  • Why determining the feasibility of a product should happen before starting production
