the U.S. Offshore manufacturing has multiple benefits, although there can be drawbacks as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Offshore production, as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/marketbusinessnews.com\/financial-glossary\/offshore-production\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">defined by Market Business News<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is \u201cthe manufacturing of a product in another country for import to the market home. It involves relocating the production process abroad.\u201d The publication makes an important note: \u201coffshore\u201d doesn\u2019t necessarily mean the factory is overseas. In fact, many \u201coffshore\u201d factories operate in Mexico, for example, with no \u201cseas\u201d or \u201cshores\u201d involved.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_Do_Companies_Seek_Offshore_Manufacturing\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why Do Companies Seek Offshore Manufacturing?<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Innovators choose manufacturing or assembly in another country typically because of lower wages, cheaper cost of materials, and\/or less strict labor regulations. Cost to manufacture goods is always a major factor in profitability. If a product can be made for less, you have a better opportunity to get the margins you need to turn a profit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S.News &amp; World Report partnered with BAV Group and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania to survey more than 20,000 people from four regions to associate 73 countries with specific characteristics. In the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/news\/best-countries\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Best Countries Rankings<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a subcategory termed \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/news\/best-countries\/open-for-business-rankings\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Open for Business<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d considered scores from five country attributes that relate to how open for business a country is. The attributes included bureaucracy, cheap manufacturing costs, corruption, a favorable tax environment, and transparent government practices.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it comes to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/news\/best-countries\/slideshows\/countries-seen-to-have-the-lowest-manufacturing-costs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cheap manufacturing costs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the following countries made the top 10 list:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10. Myanmar<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9. Sri Lanka<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8. Pakistan<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7. Malaysia<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6. The Philippines<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Indonesia<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Thailand<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Vietnam<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. <a data-wpil=\"url\" href=\"https:\/\/gembah.com\/countries\/india\/\" data-wpil=\"url\">India<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. China<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The U.S. ranks 77th in this survey. Why? Back in 2011, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.industryweek.com\/finance\/software-systems\/article\/21949525\/the-high-cost-of-manufacturing-in-america#:~:text=The%20factors%20that%20make%20the,earth%20to%20make%20a%20product.&amp;text=The%20single%20most%20significant%20drag,has%20not%20changed%20in%20decades.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Industry Week discussed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a MAPI and NAM Manufacturing Institute report that analyzed production costs in the United States relative to its top trading partners. While this report is now dated, the reasons cited as being deterrents for domestic manufacturing still hold true to a large extent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe found that structural costs &#8211; corporate tax rates, employee benefits, tort litigation, regulatory compliance and energy &#8211; are continuing to slowly eat away at the ability of U.S. manufacturers to compete effectively in the global marketplace. While manufacturers face a host of challenges, the data demonstrate that domestically imposed costs &#8211; by commission or omission of government &#8211; further undermine our ability to compete by adding at least 20% to the cost of making stuff in this country.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It went on to say that the average federal-state statutory rate of 40% has not changed, even while other countries reduce their tax rates. The only other country with a higher corporate tax rate at the time was Japan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fortunately, the federal statutory <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pgpf.org\/blog\/2020\/07\/what-is-the-difference-between-the-statutory-tax-rate-and-the-effective-tax-rate#:~:text=The%20federal%20statutory%20corporate%20tax,and%20Jobs%20Act%20(TCJA).\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">corporate tax rate in the U.S. has decreased<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> since then, thanks to the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA). The U.S. now has a 21% tax rate, more in line with many other countries. While <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pwccn.com\/en\/services\/tax\/accounting-and-payroll\/overview-of-prc-taxation-system.html#:~:text=Corporate%20income%20tax%20(%22CIT%22,certain%20integrated%20circuits%20production%20enterprises).\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">China has a 25% tax rate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it could be reduced to 15% for qualified enterprises. It will be interesting to see what happens when the TCJA expires at the end of 2025.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Advantages_of_Offshore_Manufacturing\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Advantages of Offshore Manufacturing<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The primary benefit of offshore manufacturing is the reduction of operating expenses. Many offshore countries have lower labor costs than the U.S, but that doesn\u2019t mean overall costs are less than somewhere closer to the U.S., such as Mexico. Without having to pay for <a data-wpil=\"url\" href=\"https:\/\/gembah.com\/blog\/international-freight-shipping\/\" data-wpil=\"url\">overseas freight<\/a>, you can often find comparable prices in nearby countries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Offshore manufacturers may also have access to less expensive raw materials because many raw materials come from overseas. This can reduce costs, as well as speed time to delivery. Keep in mind that parts required for certain products, such as those used in technology, often come from overseas suppliers.
