And let\u2019s be honest, the pandemic and supply chain disruptions in recent years might make you question if <a data-wpil=\"url\" href=\"https:\/\/gembah.com\/countries\/china\/\" data-wpil=\"url\">manufacturing in China<\/a> is still the obvious choice it may have been before all this change.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You should be asking a very specific question: Is China manufacturing the right solution for <\/span><b>your company and your product<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remember, news sites are interested in click bait and how to get your attention.\u00a0 They are not going to write an article about how Chinese manufacturing is as diverse as the country itself. Nor will they write about how, regardless of politics, tariffs, lockdowns, and congested ports, success with any manufacturer is about building the right team, communicating, and adapting when things change. But we love to get into the nitty-gritty and look at the nuanced reality of what is happening on the ground because we are on the ground every day, working with customers like you.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So let\u2019s put away the broad brush that non-manufacturing people want to paint the situation with. That trade recovered in 2021 to $506 billion. The first quarter of 2022 saw a 21% increase compared to the first quarter in 2021. Manufacturing in China for the U.S. market is not going down, it\u2019s going up. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldbank.org\/en\/country\/china\/overview#1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">China is now seeing good economic growth<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What has changed for the negative is the predictability of when your products ship and how long it will take for your products to get to and through U.S. ports. And, regardless of what your spouse&#8217;s uncle spouts off at a family gathering, it\u2019s not caused by one of the conspiracies he shared. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2021\/10\/27\/china-supply-chain-disruption-shipping\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The slowdown is caused by<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, amongst other things:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shortages of raw materials<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Power shortages in China<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Delays in making component parts<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A global chip shortage<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Labor shortages caused by increased demand<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Labor shortages caused by lockdowns from China\u2019s zero-COVID policy<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Backed-up ports caused by increased demand, labor shortages, and shutdowns<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Empty shipping containers in the wrong place<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overcrowded ports in the U.S.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A shortage of trains and trucks to distribute the goods in the U.S.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many of these root causes feed on each other. The chip shortage in Shanghai might impact a factory that makes components in Shenzhen that can\u2019t make an order to your supplier in Hong Kong. The good news is that it\u2019s getting better over time, and people who focus on the manufacturing sector know what to look for now.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the same time, there are positive changes across the manufacturing sector in China. Manufacturers are redoubling their efforts to improve their quality assurance and move manufacturing inland where labor costs are lower. They&#8217;re investing in digital manufacturing like digital manufacturing systems, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/bernardmarr\/2018\/09\/02\/what-is-industry-4-0-heres-a-super-easy-explanation-for-anyone\/?sh=1f6d8c79788a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Industry 4.0 initiatives<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and robotics and other automation. As companies like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2022\/05\/03\/tesla-turn-shanghai-into-worlds-largest-vehicle-export-hub-factory\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tesla are discovering<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, improvements in engineer talent, especially around electro-mechanical systems, are taking Chinese suppliers up the value chain to providing design and engineering to complement their already robust manufacturing capabilities. To <\/span><a data-wpil=\"url\" href=\"https:\/\/gembah.com\/countries\/china\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">determine if China is the right location<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for your production, work with the right people to make a smart decision for your business based on the needs of your market and your business goals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, take a look at your product and your market and decide what you need now, and what you need in the long run. Sit down with your team and outside experts and think about the importance of the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Time to market from product launch to product availability<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cost of shipping<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sensitivity to up-stream supply chain disruptions<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Production cost<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Importance of a steady, predictable monthly production<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Impact of delays on your brand and cashflow<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quality<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your industry or company may have more issues that need to be addressed. Talk them out and write them down. When you\u2019re weighing the pros and cons of production in China vs. places like Vietnam, Taiwan, <\/span><a data-wpil=\"url\" href=\"https:\/\/gembah.com\/blog\/manufacturing-in-mexico\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mexico<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or domestically, you can compare and make a smart decision.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Things are a little crazy now. Until COVID-19 fully subsides, you will probably have to deal with more lockdowns. The war in Ukraine is going to impact the availability of raw materials like plastics and metals. And these factors will impact China differently than in other countries because of their zero-COVID policy and where China sources its raw materials. Don\u2019t make a decision that will hurt you in the long run because of these shorter-term issues. A slow launch may be OK if you are ramping up production over three years. Or maybe your product is something that is hot right now and you need to get inventory immediately and sell your way through it quickly. The first is a reason to work with Chinese production partners, and the second is a reason to look at other options.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the capabilities and costs of a supplier you have found look good, and you can live with disruptions, China may be the right fit. Only you and your team can make that decision. And even though these current disruptions will pass, there will be new shocks to the system in the future. Climate, new viruses, and geopolitics have a lot of tricks up their sleeves. If China is right for you now, it probably will be when the next global derailment happens.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Suggestions_for_Getting_China_Manufacturing_Right\"><\/span><b>Suggestions for Getting China Manufacturing Right<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6050\" src=\"https:\/\/gembah.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/panorama-shot-of-people-working-in-a-factory.jpeg\" alt=\"Panorama shot of people working in a factory\" width=\"700\" height=\"242\" \/>So you have had the meetings and created the presentations and concluded that manufacturing in China is the right move for your product. Now it&#8217;s time to make sure you do it right. There are thousands of contract manufacturers in the country, and each is unique. Here are some guidelines for <\/span><a data-wpil=\"url\" href=\"https:\/\/gembah.com\/blog\/how-to-find-a-manufacturer-to-make-your-product\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">finding the right manufacturer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make a list of questions you want to ask each potential partner, and always ask them<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get to know the company beyond the sales representative<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Identify the manufacturing technology needed for your product and make sure they have it available<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Look for a partner who is implementing new automation technology or moving labor-intensive operations inland<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Understand what they will need to subcontract and evaluate them<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ask and understand how robust their supply chain is<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get a handle on your quality needs and their quality capabilities<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to these common steps you should take with every Chinese manufacturer you evaluate, there are some specific steps for finding the right supplier in China:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Investigate how much total volume they do to see how much clout they have with their suppliers<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Understand what it will it take to get your products from your factory to a port<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Try to get a feel for how connected they are in the local manufacturing community and with the local government<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ask them about their capital situation, how long can they survive if there is a lockdown<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ask about employee turnover, and specifically ask how many of their workers returned after the Chinese New Year.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">See if they use machinery and automation, including robots, to be less vulnerable to labor shortages and lockdowns<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remember, you can <\/span><a data-wpil=\"url\" href=\"https:\/\/gembah.com\/blog\/how-sourcing-agents-take-advantage-of-entrepreneurs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">work with a sourcing agent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to help with this process.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you have the right partner, sign the contracts, and transfer the design information, it&#8217;s time to start making your product.
