It\u2019s so essential to good product development, it deserves a more thorough strategy than just making a model. Your prototypes, just like your product itself, should be engineered.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To better understand what we are talking about, let\u2019s look at the definition of the verb form of engineer: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/engineer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to lay out, construct, or manage as an engineer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, when you engineer your prototype, you do make it, but you also lay out (define) and manage the whole process. And that is where the value is, which we will discuss in more detail in the next section.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It helps to think of prototyping as its own mini-product development process, with its own steps and information flowing between the steps. Below we share the typical outline used for prototype engineering.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_Write_a_Prototyping_Specification\"><\/span><b>1. Write a Prototyping Specification<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If there\u2019s no specification, you\u2019re not doing engineering. Engineers even have specification documents on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.astm.org\/media\/pdf\/bluebook_FormStyle.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how to create specification documents<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Specifications are precise, written requirements stating what you want the thing or process you\u2019re defining to do.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remember to get input from all the stakeholders on your engineering team. As you work through the process, your prototyping team checks against the specifications to ensure you\u2019re meeting the requirements.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For prototyping, you should include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What you want to learn from your prototype: what design, function, manufacturing, and support questions you need answers to\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How, where, and with whom the prototype will be tested<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cost and schedule constraints<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allowable deviations from the proposed product design<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Safety requirements<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Industry standards and requirements (required for medical devices)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Specific performance values and product characteristics requiring verification and validation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Physical deliverables<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Documentation deliverables<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Develop_a_Testing_Plan\"><\/span><b>2. Develop a Testing Plan<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using the specifications, develop a plan on how you\u2019ll test every aspect of your design. You may test in a lab, with your staff, or with potential customers. It could evaluate form, fit, or function or answer market research questions. Maybe it explores how sensitive your product is to dimensional tolerances. What\u2019s important is that the plan addresses all the specifications.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Create_a_Prototyping_Project_Plan\"><\/span><b>3. Create a Prototyping Project Plan<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now it&#8217;s time to put a project plan together. Detail and accuracy depend on your product and your industry. It could be a simple schedule with three or four tasks and a cost estimate, or it might be a complex plan with dependencies, milestones, and phase gates. Don\u2019t overdo it, but don\u2019t neglect mapping out the steps, the schedule, and the costs in a project plan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Design_the_Prototypes\"><\/span><b>4. Design the Prototypes<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wait, design the prototype? Don\u2019t you already have a preliminary or even detailed design of the product? Isn\u2019t that why you\u2019re making a prototype?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, at this point in the product development process, you have a reasonably well-defined product design. And if the prototype is an exact copy of the current product design, you just need to check the design against your prototyping specifications and make any necessary changes to meet the specifications.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But usually, you\u2019ll be experimenting with different features, materials, or colors and run through a few iterations. You must put each of those variations into a design document so manufacturing knows what to make. You start with the current design state but modify as many prototype designs as needed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_Construct_the_Prototypes\"><\/span><b>5. Construct the Prototypes<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6837 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/gembah.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/3D-printed-metal-part.jpeg\" alt=\"3D printed metal part\" width=\"700\" height=\"477\" \/>You know what you need to do, how to do it, and what the various prototypes will look like. At this point, you construct your prototypes using some combination of the following methods:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Modeling: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This approach aims to put something together by hand. You are not using manufacturing machines. Instead, you are molding clay, bending and welding metal, hand painting, and cutting out cardboard. But for this level of detail, a craftsman or artisan does the modeling.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>3D Printing: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wohlersassociates.com\/resource\/additive-manufacturing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">additive manufacturing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 3D printing was invented to make prototypes. It allows a user to go directly from a computer model to a physical part by building the part one layer at a time. 3D printing has come a long way, and there are now seven different types of additive manufacturing, including full-color parts, metal, and components with injection molding material properties.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Rapid Manufacturing: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes, making the parts that go into your product by hand or with 3D printing doesn\u2019t quite work. You can employ traditional manufacturing methods to make a part quickly \u2014 CNC machining, welding, laser cutting, soft molding, or sheet metal forming or bending. Also, if your product has electronics, you should use rapid prototyping techniques to build your prototype boards. Make sure you find a vendor that specializes in prototype manufacturing.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Injection Molding: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your final product contains injection molded parts, sometimes 3D printing or machining won\u2019t give you the parts you need for your prototype. In that case you need to make tools and injection mold the components. The good news is that some companies specialize in low-volume rapid injection molding using high-speed machining and other rapid tooling processes.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Virtual Prototyping: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can also construct a prototype that only exists on a computer. Using advanced simulation tools, you can create a highly accurate digital mock-up. Now you must carry out your test plan rigorously and methodically. Experimentation and flexibility are encouraged but document everything. If you are not rigorous at this step, all the work you put into engineering your prototype will be wasted.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"7_Write_a_Report\"><\/span><b>7. Write a Report<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, your prototyping team must create a report. The report records the testing results and provides input on every specification. For some, it\u2019s as simple as a specific requirement met. But if the condition was a complicated group of questions, the data you obtained must be written down. That goes double for observations and conclusions made by whoever did the testing.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Engineering_Not_Fabricating\"><\/span><b>Engineering, Not Fabricating<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Looking at this process, you can see the difference between fabricating a mock-up and the more rigorous and beneficial function of prototype engineering. There is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/phoenix\/news\/2018\/10\/10\/i-am-not-a-maker-i-am-an-engineer-there-is-a-big.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">difference between being an engineer and being a maker<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
